Chance Waters raises the bar to Infinity!

After more than five years traveling the country and releasing music under the stage name of Phatchance, Chance Waters has decided to go back to his given name. Last night saw the release of the lead single and title track from his first album under the name of Chance Waters, Infinity which is due out later this year.

Infinity was first released as an acoustic track following on Inkstains Acoustic, an ep following his successful album Inkstains. Inkstains saw Phatchance named as the featured artist on Triple J Unearthed, Music NSW, SBA Music and Myspace.com. The single sees a compleat reworking of the original version. "the song's probably taken at least 80 hours to finish behind the scenes, not to mention the video etc." - Chance Waters. The film clip for Infinity has already had huge success with over 1600 views in just over 24 hours. Check out the film clip below and cop the single when it drops on iTunes later this month.

So Phatchance is dead?

So Sydney based emcee Phatchance who is part of I Forget Sorry has today announced that "Phatchance is Dead". Don't worry Chance Waters is still alive though. With the completion of his second album approaching, Chance's change of stage name form, Phatchance to Chance Waters is a clear sign that his music is evolving into bigger and better things. Today in his announcement of the change he had this to say, "When I was 16 and started out performing Phatchance was a great name for me, I was a battle rapper and it suited what I was doing really well" and that  "I wasn't happy with the name Phatchance anymore, when people asked what I did and what I was called I felt like every-time I said the name they got an impression of the type of music I make that just wasn't what I'm trying to do." Make sure that you go cop Chance Waters latest release now for free through the I Forget Sorry website.

Featured Artist of the Month - Phatchance

Group Name: Phatchance
Members: Chance Dylan Waters
BOTA: When and why did you first start writing music, and have you always called your self Phatchance?
I guess before I started 'writing' music I was pretty into the freestyle and battle elements of the whole thing, I'd think up lines but I don't think I ever committed anything to paper until the later years of high-school, even then it was more of a hobby for me and my style of writing was very different to the tip I'm on now. Phatchance was definitely my first pseudonym though, prior to that I just went by my real name, which is Chance.
BOPA: Your latest body of work, Inkstains (Acoustic) saw you preform live with a band and a whole new approach to your music. Why did you decide to take you music in the that direction?
We'd performed with a few band members here and there on our tours before, we like to generally take at least a bass player and a guitarist with us wherever we go, but this was the first time we'd ditched the backing music entirely and gone for a full band line up. I guess it came about because both myself and Coptic were interested in doing something a little different and a little more musically challenging and we were already working fairly closely with our friend Jon Reichardt, whose quite the multi-instrumentalist, so the opportunity kind of presented itself. I've got a huge penchant for acoustic and folk music and I thought it'd be interesting to try and pull some of those sounds into local hip-hop, as I don't believe it's been done in that fashion before. It was a really rewarding experience and probably the most fun I've ever had putting together a musical project, it was also nice to give some of the b-sides from Inkstains a proper revamp and let them see the light of day, particularly a few of my favourite tracks which were never very 'singley' on the original album.
BOTA: As and independent artist, what do you wish to achieve through your music or what is your biggest goal in your music career?
I think the elephant in the room is that all independent musicians would like to be able to live off of their music, which is obviously one of my long term aims, but I guess I have more esoteric goals than that which are probably more important to me when you boil it down. I really love the idea of leaving a mark on the world in some fashion, I feel like lyrics are one of the best ways to really touch somebody and create change in the world around you, I think in Australia particularly we're actually pretty receptive to personal song writing if we're given the opportunity, but it can be very hard to break the radio and media circuit with those types of songs, that's probably very high on my list of priorities, managing to achieve success without compromising the core messages in my music.
BOTA: How would you best describe your music?
My tag-line is 'Emotive, Independent, Australian Hip-Hop' which probably captures it pretty well, I guess I'm a mish-mash of influences but I definitely fall on the alternative/emotive side of the spectrum, I think I'm one of the few hip-hop artists in the country who uses a lot of harmony work in my tracks and my favourite songs are usually the type of introspective tracks that get thrown onto albums as a b-side or a book end, I think something magical happens when you manage to do those tracks right and make them a corner stone of the album.
BOTA: Are there any future works and performances planned/in progress?
I'm knee deep in writing my second album 'Infinity' - we're currently polishing up a few of the best songs and trying to work out who we want featuring. Most of the production side of it's done and at this point it's just trying to take our time to make sure we get everything right. I'm also finishing up the writing and recording of a free mixtape I'm dropping in December called 'Approaching Infinity' and I have a few video clips and collaborations in the works, including some songs with Mind over Matter, Johnny Utah, Cool Poindexter , One Above & Mr Hill.
BOTA: Your recently released a remix of Gotye’s 'Somebody That I Use To Know'. What is it about this song that made you remix it?
The second I heard the track I resonated with it heavily, in my opinion Gotye is one of the most talented, professional and approachable artists in the Australian music scene. I've been pretty obsessed with his work for a long time, I'd say 'Hearts A Mess' is probably one of my favourite Australian tracks fullstop, so when I heard STIUTK I knew pretty much straight away I wanted to approach him about remixing it. He was kind enough to send me the parts, I contacted One Above and asked him if he'd like to remix the song for me and we worked on it together solidly for a week or so till we had something we were both happy with.

BOTA: You are apart of a independant movement, I Forget Sorry? Who makes up this crew and what is IFS all about?
'I Forget, Sorry!' is comprised of myself, Johnny Utah, Coptic Soldier and Mind Over Matter, as well as the solo projects of Smiles Again, who is half of Mind Over Matter. Basically we're a group of close friends and like minded musicians who wanted to try and maintain our independence and work closely together, 'I Forget, Sorry!' is kind of like an alternative approach to the record label model of music, we help each other out with everything and cross pollinate our music as much as possible and basically focus on finding ways to engage with our listeners and keep each other passionate about the work we're doing.

August Feature Artist - Stories For Nothing aka Kelton Muir

Each month Bottom Of The Atlas will feature an artist or group starting this month. This month we are going to get the ball rolling with Sydney based artist, Kelton Muir (Stories For Nothing). I managed to catch up with Kelton for a brief chat on his institutions, works and aspirations.
Group Name: Stories For Nothing
Members: Kelton Muir
Releases to date: First Book of Rhymes
Idol: Nick Briant-Smith aka Solo from Horrorshow
BOTA: When did you officially decide to release works under the title “Stories For Nothing”?
Stories For Nothing: There wasn’t a precise date as such when it started, I guess that it was sometime last year during year 12, it just happened. That shit was all a blur really.
BOTA: Your first release, First Book of Rhymes. What inspired these tracks.
Stories For Nothing: First Book of Rhymes is literally that, my first book of rhymes combined into a short album. The inspiration for this collection of songs came from my very early introduction into aussie hip hop combined with my introduction into kidulthood. I was finding my feet in both, and that is strongly represented in the music.
BOTA: Who and or what would you say is your biggest inspiration for you when creating your music?
Stories For Nothing: The biggest inspirations for music would have to be fellow Sydney artists, Horrorshow. I also draw inspiration from Tupac and various other artist.
BOTA: What do you wish to achieve through your music?
Stories For Nothing: My ultimate life time goal would be to make an impact on peoples life. I want my music to inspire people and spread infectious emotions through the audience. If I can achieve that, even if only with a small group of people, I will be a happy man.
BOTA: What best describes your music?
Stories For Nothing: My music is an exhibition of my emotions and the thoughts, feelings and actions of those around me through musical expressionism, poetry and witty lyricism.
BOTA: Why did you start to make music?
Stories For Nothing: I actually wrote a rhyme about that today... “for most of my life-time, hip-hop has been my life-line, so late one sour night-time i picked up a pen to write rhymes”. I guess I just felt the need to express myself and music was simply my outlet. Plus, hip-hop has been so influential to me and my life, I feel like I should give something myself to the genre.
BOTA: Are there any future works and performances planed/in progress?
Stories For Noting: I just finished a string of live performances supporting the likes of Phatchance, Coptic Soldier and the Electric Elements Crew as well as doing a few small shows of just my own work (well, my work and the work of my amazing acoustic band). I have a few shows on the radar including a few local festival slots and the "Hologram" shows, so my schedule is continually busy. My "Second Book Of Rhymes" is going to drop soon, it’s in the mixing process at the moment. It should be considerably stronger than my First Book Of Rhymes and is going to be something that I will be very proud of when I release it. Busy times ahead – stay tuned.

Download First Book of Rhymes for free here and in the meantime check out this track below called What's Going On produced by Jae Moon and mastered by Phatchance.

Phatchance and One Above's "Somebody I Used to Know Remix" (Gotye/Kimbra)

Its finally here Phatchance and One Above have released their Somebody I Used To Know track. Check it out down below and spread it round. Deffinatly worth a listen its a change from Chance's latest acoustic work. We can see that on this one he really has taken his music further both lyrically and musically. The slow beat and chant like lyrics at the start that slowly progress to build up to the chorus really shows this. Download it now off sound cloud while you can.

Hey! Where's ur DJ?

I Forget, Sorry!, 3D World & Big Tree Artists Present
Phatchance & Coptic Soldier
‘Hey, where’s your DJ?’ The first ever acoustic Australian hip-hop tour.

TICKETS - http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=46799&ref=moshtix&skin

Solo indie hip-hop artists
Phatchance and Coptic Soldier have forged a large cult following through their tireless touring schedule and high energy stage show. After a year packed with a massive touring schedule, including two national headline tours and supports for heavyweight acts like Method Man & Redman, DJ Premier and The Beatnuts, the artists flipped the table completely in February 2011 with the release of a unique dual-disc acoustic hip hop EP and subsequent capacity acoustic residency at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory. As a result of the success of the residency and overwhelming response to the releases the artists are once again hitting the road for an extended east coast tour, and this time they’re leaving the DJ at home.

Crowned a Triple J Unearthed, MYSPACE.COM and SBA Music Featured Artist, as well as packing out venues nationally on his ‘Inkstains’ and ‘I Forget, Sorry!’ 2010 Tours, Phatchance has quickly become Sydney’s biggest unsigned hip-hop artist. With his lead acoustic single ‘Build It Up’ currently receiving regular rotation on Triple J and Inkstains (Acoustic) garnering rave reviews in street press and throughout the blogosphere, it’s clear to listeners exactly why he’s earned labels such as “a masterful story teller” (The Australian) and “wisdom beyond his years” (Onion Mag).

Since releasing his debut solo EP ‘The Sound Of Wings 2’ in February this year, Coptic Soldier has been deemed “one of the most promising acts in Australian hip-hop” (The AU Review) and has quickly turned heads both on the ground and in the upper echelons of the Australian music industry. After being branded a Music NSW featured artist and AMRAP AirIT featured artist and beating out highly acclaimed pop acts such as Sparkadia and Cloud Control as well as genre giants The Herd and Urthboy in the AMRAP AirIT charts, Coptic’s acoustic single “I Hate Sleep” is proving itself a massive hit in the independent radio circuit.

Both artists will be joined by their full live band in a series of intimate, acoustic performances, showcasing their musicianship, endearing stage presence and acclaimed writing styles. With tour support by close collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Jon Reichardt, as well as a series of special guests in each state, these shows will probably be the only opportunities to catch this unique acoustic material live before the artists go into lock down to work on their respective albums.
